Brendan’s talk today will explore the excellent online resource, Code.org’s Code Studio. This talk will show how this platform could be exactly what is needed by the many teachers who do not feel confident about teaching the new curriculum in KS1 and KS2, including it’s ability to track pupil’s progress as well as it’s potential to facilitate a flipped-classroom model and promote independent learning.
Brendan did a B.Ed. straight out of 2nd-level and was a mainstream 5th class (Year 6 equivalent) teacher in a Co Tipperary primary school for 10 years. In 2012, he discovered Scratch for the first time and got involved in the Irish PDST, delivering training on Scratch to other teachers, both primary and secondary. In September 2013, he moved to London and began his current role as Head of Computing in an independent boys school. Here he teaches all Computing lessons from Years 1 – 8, Year 5 Maths as well as being a Year 5 Form Tutor. He occasionally mentors in Scratch at various Coder Dojos around London and is currently in the application process for CAS Master Teacher (Primary).
